International Markets for Brand Protection Solutions – 2nd Edition

Publication date: December 2007

A techno-economic market review

Authors: James Bevan and Jeremy Plimmer

Global losses due to product / brand related product piracy are running into several hundred $ billions per year in today’s world and growing significantly year on year. More importantly lives are being lost.

First published in May 2004, Vandagraf has now completed a 2nd edition of this report title – Much more comprehensive, covering 20 plus end-user sectors with updated market figures, additional Case Studies – 300 plus pages.

The World of product related crime continues to expand and mutate rapidly. There are a number of drivers, but the following two primary forces in particular have been causing accelerated growth of counterfeit parts finding their way in to global supply chains.

  • The economic boom of China and the shifting of many Western manufacturing operations to China coupled with the fact that China has become the number one counterfeiter in the World both for exports and within their own home market
  • The rapid growth of the internet as a tool for buying and selling almost anything worldwide – Face to face transactions are not required and the anonymity that can be maintained suits counterfeiters well. Neither may products be inspected prior to delivery.

Developments and future trends for security packaging / security labels and security technologies are being closely monitored by Vandagraf International in association with the Product & Image Security Foundation.

With the market for Brand Protection Solutions still only representing a mere one half of one percent of the total financial losses being suffered annually, there are major potential opportunities for innovative suppliers of solutions.

Pro-active involvement of packaging / labels companies in security issues and value added security products is increasing.

The report is divided in to 3 chapters :

Chapter 1.
Product Related Crime & Brand Protection and Security Packaging Issues – This chapter outlines types of product related crime, types of brand protection solutions and quantifies market opportunities.

Product related crime covers a range of types of criminal activities, including counterfeiting and piracy – Forgery / alteration fraud, parallel trading, grey markets and diversion, unauthorised distribution, back door trading and over-runs, copy and look-alike products, retail theft and various forms of tampering (grazing, tampering for the purpose of obtaining fraudulent cash refunds, pilfering i.e. Removal of some product from its container, malicious criminal tampering).

The market for brand protection solutions is estimated at $3.7 billion in 2006.

Chapter 2.
End-User Market Segments affected by Product Piracy - This chapter analyses product related crime by end-user sectors.

Unlike previous reports in this field, Vandagraf researchers have examined each of the 20 plus end-users listed by the World Customs Organisation and estimated the scale of financial losses for each sector. End-user sectors covered include: Automotive, consumer electronics, drink and food, pharmaceuticals, luxury goods, software, video and audio media, toiletries & cosmetics and numerous other end-user categories.

From this it has been possible to build up an aggregated figure for total losses for product related crime. Vandagraf best estimates put this value of the overall figure at around $610 billion.

Chapter 3.
Main global and regional suppliers of Brand Protection Solutions. This chapter examines the supply side industry structure and profiles 186 suppliers of security technologies and solutions.

Today a range of Brand Protection Technologies are available for use in the fight against such product related crime, ranging from individual proprietary security features to complex integrated brand protection systems. Suppliers can further be classified as 1st, 2nd and 3rd Levels of defence.

Technologies covered include high density 3D / matrix bar codes and other coding technologies, security holographic devices including holographic threads (OVIDS / DOVIDS), security inks & coatings, security materials / substrates - papers / security films, tags & taggants (chemical and molecular coding), nano-technologies, other security printing techniques, tamper evident caps and closures and tamper evident labels, EAS anti-theft tags and systems. Different packaging / labelling configurations / materials (cartonboard, paper, plastics, metal and glass) are covered.

Strategic options for suppliers of solutions are evaluated. There is a need to develop concerted brand protection programs. Solutions must address the needs of individual customers, which may involve integrated security systems, post consumer authentication capabilities, customer / supplier partnerships, levels of service required, other.
