Brand Protection Solutions For Drink & Food Products goes into more depth in terms of its particular end user market and includes detailed analysis of problems and key drivers, together with descriptions of appropriate solutions, including actual case studies and also highlighting potential suppliers.

Review:
Though grouped together in this report, Drink & Food products generally have little in common in terms of product related crime.

Alcoholic drink products are often counterfeited and subjected to various
forms of refilling and/or dilution extensively. They are also widely targeted by smugglers (like cigarettes particularly for countries with high excise duty).

Food products are most vulnerable to tampering of various sorts, together with a few cases of counterfeiting usually in connection with high margin regional products.

Drink products
A quarter of all spirits brands claiming to be of European origin now sold in China are counterfeit, according to an EU liquor association – This poses a serious threat to public health as well as the industry's profits. China is becoming an increasingly important market for spirits exports, with further potential for growth, though there had been few significant improvements in crackdowns by authorities. The problem of fake brands is not unique to China and the Far East. There were also growing concerns regarding counterfeit alcoholic Drinks in many Eastern European nations. Most counterfeit liquors are produced and largely consumed in Russia and China. Reports have indicated that as much as 50% of branded Vodka consumed in Russia is counterfeit and it is understood that tens of thousands of Russians may be dying each year as a direct result of consuming such counterfeit liquors/spirits.

Several systems now exist for protecting vintage wines from counterfeit attacks. RFID is already used in conjunction with security ink marking and other security features at bottle level. RFID can also provide an indication of the temperature levels experienced by the wine throughout its life in storage and as it moves through the supply chain.

Food products
Within the huge global food market, it is generally packaged processed food products and meats that tend to be branded and hence such products are more often potential victims to counterfeiting. Although overall growth of food consumption is relatively slow, a growing proportion of this total figure is processed and packaged in today’s world.

Counterfeit versions of premium price regional luxury product delicacies such as caviar, smoked hams (world famous Parma Ham) and honey have been
publicised.

Tampering in its various forms is generally a more significant and concerning problem in the food sector today, including grazing (sampling of products in the
retail store without purchasing), tampering for the purpose of obtaining fraudulent cash refunds, pilfering (removal of some product from its packaging – somewhere along the supply chain or at retail), malicious criminal tampering (poisoning or spiking of products, often accompanied by extortion demands).

The market for traditional brand protection products in the food sector is relatively small compared to the market for such products for the drink sector. Tamper evident features and devices are, on the other hand, very widely used in the food sector.

Specific to the food sector, there is also a major demand for products and devices that assure ‘quality and freshness’ of products. Such ‘quality and freshness’ devices may be viewed as being a component of the market for brand protection solutions and are used widely for limited life fresh, chilled & frozen foods including fruit and vegetables, meats, cheeses and other products.

Brands and also retailers can suffer damage to reputation from selling sub-standard quality food products. There is also a significant danger to consumer health. Some important developments in the area of ‘quality and freshness’ are anticipated with the growth in usage of time/temperature devices and the decline of traditional ‘use by date’ labels.

Description:
Vandagraf International in association with Product and Image Security Foundation has launched the first 3 reports of a planned series of up to 10 end-user market sector specific reports on Brand Protection Solutions.

Brand Protection Solutions for Automotive and Aeronautical Parts goes into more depth in terms of its particular end user market and includes detailed analysis of problems and key drivers, together with descriptions of appropriate solutions, including actual case studies and also highlighting potential suppliers.

Review:
The market for Automotive and Aeronautical parts includes replacement parts for cars, vans, trucks, tractors, agricultural machinery, earth movers/heavy construction plant, tyres and defense, including military aircraft, missiles, space vehicles.

The Automotive and Aeronautical parts sector comprises a broad range of dissimilar product categories, ranging from mechanical parts, sub-assemblies, assemblies, through to complete jet engines and other major items. Also from bodywork panels/ bumpers/fenders and structural parts through to electronic components and tyres. Counterfeiting and other product related crimes are today widespread across these market sectors.

Health and safety can be dramatically affected as such parts do not meet the safety or legal requirements set by legislation.

Limited means of effective remediation exist as legal actions have serious limitations in terms of power outside North America and Western Europe.

Automotive
Counterfeiting is widespread in the Automotive sector and has become a major problem for the industry, most particularly with regard to replacement parts. Automotive products that are most often counterfeited tend to be the ‘generic’ components that are most frequently replaced, which includes routine service type parts, such as air filters and oil filters, brake pads, spark plugs, clutch linings, belts, radiators, hoses, windscreen wiper blades.

In the face of growing concern about counterfeit Automotive parts, manufacturers have increasingly been specifying additional security and brand protection features, including holograms, tamper evident void devices, forensic markings, unique inks and other sorts of devices that can be integrated in labels. Alternative means to security labels include laser etching.

Various types of labels, including durable labels are used for numerous types of application in cars and other types of vehicle, including under the hood/bonnet labels, component labels, airbag warning labels, bar code consecutively numbers ID and traceability labels, name plates and rating plates, serial plates, warranty labels, care/use instruction labels, quality inspection labels and more.

Aeronautical
The Aeronautical & Defense market includes revenues by manufacturers from civil(private and commercial) and also military aerospace and defense equipment and replacement parts, including defense electronics, and space equipment.

In the Aeronautical sector, there have been some high profile cases of counterfeiting and fraudulent documentation for reconditioned parts and/or crash damaged parts, which have even subsequently led to air crashes and loss of life.

The main threats in the Aeronautical sector are to replacement and reconditioned parts.
The Aeronautical parts sector is in need of an (industry-wide standardised) track and trace system to validate parts. Some kind of ‘pedigree’ system is desirable (this could be paper based or electronic, involving RFID).

In a worst case scenario, unauthorised electronic parts used for a defense application could contain malicious software that would malfunction and possibly even contaminate other on-board electronics systems.

Sophisticated secure procedures and solutions need to be developed to combat such dangerous threats.

Brand Protection Solutions for Electronic Equipment & Components goes into more depth in terms of its particular end user market and includes detailed analysis of problems and key drivers, together with descriptions of appropriate solutions, including actual case studies and also highlighting potential suppliers.

Over the last few years counterfeiters have become much more resourceful and sophisticated and are no longer limiting themselves to counterfeiting the types of goods that they have been known for previously (such as footwear, clothing, handbags, watches and the like).

Review:
Today, there are increasing numbers with high-tech goods that are being counterfeited. Counterfeiting of electronics components and also all kinds of electronic products is today widespread and has become a major problem for the industry.

Due to comparatively low R&D and labour costs, many electronics hardware manufacturing companies have been relocating to Asia-Pacific over the past decade or so.

As a source of counterfeit electrical / electronic components products China reigns supreme. While in Chinese marketplace, between 10% and 40% of electronics goods are believed to be counterfeit today. Across the Middle East the estimated figure is 20% to 40% counterfeit and Eastern Europe 10% to 40% counterfeit.

There have been many instances of severe safety failures resulting in injury and even death because of counterfeit components in electrical goods. In addition the failure of individual components can lead to knock-on failures in major systems or infrastructure. When such tragic events take place, the damage to reputation and strength of brand value tends to be harmed in a way that it can be difficult to reverse.

Security Features and Brand Protection Systems – Labeling & Packaging Applications - Electronic Equipment & Components

The first step towards effective brand protection is to improve and optimise supply chain security. Supply chains across electronic equipment and components markets tend to be characterised by a number of routes to market:

Appropriate measures need to be developed with due consideration to the route(s) to market involved for a specific product or product category.

Authentication technologies can assist in the fight against product piracy but it requires more than technology on its own. It is important to develop an appropriate strategy and to apply effective tactics to anti-counterfeiting and product protection.
